In 1972 a group of my peers in my 99% white high school were discussing racial equality. The majority opinion seemed to be that racial equality had been accomplished. I asserted that it was not.
We would know when racial equal had been accomplished only when it was so commonly practiced that it was no longer considered a subject of discussion. I was immediately attacked for making such a “blatantly bigoted” statement. I permanently lost friends that day.
That has always bothered me as I still hold to that opinion. I heard Melissa Harris-Perry echo my opinion as a insightful statement of fact.
Thank you Melissa, finally the discussion has caught up to were I was 41 years ago. Now let’s proceed, for it is still a subject requiring much further discussion and action.
