As a teacher, I test students to, first have the students prove to themselves how much they have learned, second to allow the students to prove to me that I understand their progress, third to promote a new point of view for looking at what they have learned.
All three goals of testing is for meeting a student need.
What part of “meeting student needs” does standardized testing address? none.
The current education system ignores the individual student’s needs and thus fails.
The only person in the equation who knows what an individual needs is the teacher who is in the room with the student. Over the past 28 years I find that teachers’ voices are silenced and student needs are ignored.
Standardized testing is a political process, not an educational process, at the cost of actual education.
